Wait, What? I Can Do That?

Enjoying the ride up on the chairlift at Winter Park, CO, ready for a day of adventure in the snowy mountains!

In the relentless pursuit of success, as an entrepreneur I often find myself caught in a never-ending cycle of work, growth, and more work. The idea of taking a break seems counterintuitive, if not outright negligent at times to me. Most of the time, I know this mindset is not a healthy one and will ultimately lead to burnout and a lack of focus, which, let’s face it, is extremely detrimental to both personal well-being and business success.

I think I am going to take a day…

It was late Monday afternoon when I looked at my husband and said, how about we take a day off tomorrow and go skiing?  Pretty sure he thought an invader had occupied my body, but did not hesitate to say, OK!

This wasn't an act of escapism but a conscious decision to reset my mindset. Every entrepreneur, heck – every human being, needs a break.  A day to just be, forget about everything and just be!  This day off provided me with a sense of peace and relaxation that had become foreign to my daily grind.

The benefits of such a pause cannot be overstated. Disconnecting from the continuous cycle of business tasks allows for mental and emotional space, giving rise to clarity and rejuvenation. It's a moment to not think about work, growth, or the next big project. Instead, it's about focusing on the present, engaging in activities that relax and fulfill you, and simply taking a break. This approach is not about losing a day of work but about investing in yourself to enhance your productivity and creativity in the long run.

Resetting Your Mindset

Taking a day helps break the cycle of stress and constant thinking about work, providing a perspective that is often lost in the thick of things. This perspective is essential not just for personal health but for innovative thinking and problem-solving. A relaxed mind is more capable of creative thought, leading to better decision-making and more effective strategies when you do return to work.

The Impact of a Day Off

The impact of taking a day for oneself goes beyond just the individual. It sets a precedent for a healthier work-life balance within your team and organization. Demonstrating the value of rest and relaxation, especially as an entrepreneur, can encourage a more sustainable and productive work environment. It shows that taking care of oneself is not a luxury but a necessity for sustained success.

Returning with Renewed Energy

The day spent away from work in the mountains did more than just allow me to relax; it recharged my batteries. I will say, that when I returned to work yesterday, I found myself with a renewed sense of energy and focus, ready to tackle challenges and some projects that I just could not bring myself to start. This energy is infectious and capable of inspiring and motivating those around you. It's a clear reminder that sometimes, stepping back is the best way to leap forward.

Let's challenge the notion that non-stop work equals success and recognize that sometimes, the most productive thing we can do is take a day for ourselves. Whether it's skiing in the mountains, reading a book, or simply spending time in nature, finding peace in disconnection can be the key to unlocking our full potential. So, I encourage you to take that day away, reset, and return with a mindset primed for success.
