I am on virtual meetings ALL DAY LONG sometimes and yesterday someone asked me, what is on the credenza behind you? I politely said, oh a bunch of stuff my family made. This morning as I walked into my office I heard them ask that question in my head. Before heading to my desk to start my day, I walked to my credenza and took it all in. These objects are not mere decorations; they are powerful reminders of the people I have lost, each crafted with love and creativity, embodying a part of their essence.
As I glance at the welded man trapped in a cage, made by my late father, I am reminded of his skill as a craftsman and his dedication to creating something unique. The rocks, painted by my mother, carry the vibrancy of her artistic spirit. Every stroke of her brush was a reflection of her soul, now forever preserved in these simple stones.
Then there's the beautiful painting created by my beloved daughter, who tragically left this world four years ago. Her artwork reflects the beauty and innocence of youth, and every brushstroke speaks to the immense potential she held. And let's not forget the tiny flag, weathered and bearing the name of a young man whom I did not know, but who paid the ultimate sacrifice in combat. This flag accompanied me on a 1,000-mile bike ride for Honor Flight, symbolizing the importance of honoring and remembering those who served.
As I reflect on the significance of these items, I am reminded of the power of connection, both in life and business. Our relationships with people, whether through family, friends, colleagues, or clients, enrich our lives and leave lasting imprints on our hearts. In business, these connections can determine the success of ventures, collaborations, and partnerships.
There is a definite parallel between these meaningful objects and the value of forging authentic connections in life and business:
Crafting Relationships:Â Just as my loved ones poured their hearts into these creations, nurturing relationships requires investing time, effort, and care. Building genuine connections with others involves understanding their needs, sharing experiences, and providing support when needed.
Preserving Memories:Â These objects serve as tangible mementos of the people who made them. Similarly, strong connections with others create cherished memories that stand the test of time. Remembering shared experiences, accomplishments, and challenges keeps those connections alive even when circumstances change.
Strength Through Loss:Â Losing my daughter, father, and mother was profoundly painful. However, the connections I had with them live on through these objects. Similarly, our business relationships can serve as pillars of strength during tough times. A supportive network can provide solace, encouragement, and motivation to overcome obstacles.
Creativity and Collaboration:Â Each art piece on my credenza showcases the creativity of its creator. Collaboration with diverse and talented individuals in business sparks creativity and leads to innovative solutions. Embracing different perspectives fosters a culture of innovation and growth.
Embracing Gratitude:Â The sign on my credenza reminds me to be thankful. Gratitude is a powerful force that deepens connections. Expressing appreciation and recognizing the efforts of those around us strengthens relationships and fosters a positive and supportive environment.
Life's most treasured moments are often tied to our connections with others. As we celebrate the memories represented by these objects, we should also embrace the significance of relationships in our lives and businesses. Whether through shared experiences, collaboration, creativity, or gratitude, authentic relationships enrich every aspect of our journey.
I am curious, what is on your credenza?
