Today, as we celebrate Women's Entrepreneur Day, I want to share a personal story - a journey of breaking internal and external barriers.
When I was 18, I remember saying how much I wanted to ride my bike in the iconic Seattle to Portland bicycle ride, a challenging 200-mile ride that begins in Seattle, WA, and ends in Portland, OR. Every year, I would watch the news story about this ride and think, one day, I will ride this! But, my dream was overshadowed constantly by someone very close to me telling me, "You can't do that, you will never be able to do that, you are not good enough". This person's words were consistently derogatory and left me feeling small, helpless, and defeated.Â
Finally, when I was 30 years old, I realized that my dreams matter and decided that my life is too short to be around people who diminish my dreams. I might be small, but I am MIGHTY!Â
WATCH ME!! I screamed out as I pushed down on the pedal of the STP! This moment marked the beginning of my newfound life. One where what I wanted mattered!Â
That ride wasn't just about covering those 200 miles; it was about shattering the invisible chains that held me back. It marked the first time I truly pushed back against the voices that told me what I could and couldn't do. It became a defining moment, leading me to adopt the motto: "I do what I want."
This motto wasn't just a rebellious chant but a declaration of independence from years of self-doubt and limitations. Fast forward to today, at 54, I stand as a proud entrepreneur who founded Chickenango at 48. My journey from that first STP ride at 30 to conquering the Trestle Downhill Mountain Bike Park in Winter Park, Colorado, at 53, mirrors the growth of my business.
The resistance I faced in my early years played a significant role in shaping my entrepreneurial journey. It taught me resilience, the power of self-belief, and the courage to chase after what seems unattainable.
Today, I'm not just celebrating another trip around the sun or the success of Chickenango. I'm celebrating the spirit of Women's Entrepreneurship Day. To all women, your dreams are valid, your ambitions are attainable, and your journey is uniquely yours. Embrace it, live it out loud, and remember: DO WHAT YOU WANT!
Happy Women's Entrepreneur Day!
