Discover Before You DEGREE!

Why Today's Teens Should Roam the World Before College

As a parent, we all want the best for our children; however, my definition of "Best has evolved over the years. Traditional trajectories—graduate, immediately go to college, secure a job, and have life all planned out by 25—may work for some. But I firmly believe that there’s another equally valid path: exploring the world in one's 20s.

Here's why:

1. The Value of Adventure and Exploration

Life's not about the destination but the journey. In our 20s, we're often at our most adventurous and resilient. It’s a prime time to travel, meet diverse people, experience different cultures, and gain a broader perspective. This exploration isn’t just about discovering the world but also discovering oneself.

2. Understanding What You Love (and Don’t Love)

How can we possibly know what we want if we haven’t tried a bit of everything? Exploring various fields, professions, and hobbies gives us a tangible sense of what ignites our passion and what doesn't. These experiences are invaluable as they prevent mid-life regrets and crises from unexplored potential or unfulfilled desires.

3. Building Resilience and Flexibility

When you're out exploring, only some things go as planned. Missed trains, language barriers, or unfamiliar work environments can be challenging. Yet, these challenges hone our problem-solving skills, teaching us to adapt and overcome. These essential life skills are often best learned outside of a classroom.

4. Networking Beyond Boundaries

By venturing out, our teens open doors to a world of connections. Whether it’s a fellow backpacker who becomes a business partner or a mentor they meet while interning overseas, the relationships built during this time can profoundly influence their personal and professional futures.

5. Maturing at Their Own Pace

The societal pressure to “have it all figured out” by 25 is immense. Yet, maturity and understanding don’t always come with age but experience. By allowing our teens the freedom to explore, we’re giving them the space to grow, learn, and mature at the right pace.

Education and traditional career paths have undeniable value, but so does exploration. By encouraging our teens to discover the world and themselves in their 20s, we're equipping them with experiences, memories, and lessons that will last a lifetime. We empower them to make informed choices about their futures, ensuring they lead successful and fulfilling lives.
